Post What motor size should I buy
Hello everyone. This is my first post here.

I am looking to buy a surface drive. I have an alweld 1444 and would like some motor size suggestions. Also, with the added weight of a mud motor should I add pontoons?

Your input is greatly appreciated.

Pontoons ( pods) will hurt the performance of a surface drive, it could also interfere with turning radius. With that size boat I would think a GTR25 would be a good fit. I would recommend calling the makers of different motors and asking them their opionion on motor size for your boat, they would know more than most on any forum.

I have a 14x42 Alweld, and I couldn't imagine putting my 25GTR on it. Too heavy. It has a Backwater SWOMP longtail with a 23hp. Pretty nice combo.

O crap I read that first and though the boat was a 1644 not a 1444. A 25gtr would be to heavy. I would check out copper head if you want a surface drive if not you can get a good sized LT from several different manufacturers.

I appreciate the feedback. Long tails are lighter than surface drives? Thanks again.

They are. Much less material and parts. With that boat, I think a long tail would be a great option. Especially a Backwater Inc. version. Or a small CopperHead.

Depending on the size of longtail, the Copperhead surface drives can be lighter. I had a 25 hp longtail that weighed 175 lbs and the Copperheads weigh about 135 lbs. I'd put a Copperhead 23hp on that boat. Forget the pods.
