Re: Phowler Prowler 1236 on the marsh - 12hp Copperhead
I don't know what these guys that are getting these speeds do, but my friend has a 10hp on a 14 jon and it runs about 20 with one person and 10 with two people. Thy also don't go through lillies worth chit and tear the seals up quick.

Re: Phowler Prowler 1236 on the marsh - 12hp Copperhead
Yea it could be the boat. The motors are fun to drive bc there so small they feel like a toy, but I guess you can't expect them to go through everyhing a 35hp is going to go through......…have you had problems with seal in front of the prop, friend has gone through 3 in a month?

Re: Phowler Prowler 1236 on the marsh - 12hp Copperhead
These little motors are not meant to compete with the larger motors, they will take alot of punishment, but they are not going to take being bounched off every stump and log in the pond. They have a specific niche they fill, lightweight and powerful for small boats with modest loads. They will get you into the HP restricted areas at speed and the total rigs are light enough that you don't have to blast your way out of the thick stuff, the boats will push out pretty easy.
These little motors are no different then the larger ones, the motor is one part of the performance formula, the boat is the other part. Just like with the bigger surface drives, a boat that draft less and has the right rake angle and surface are to plane quickly without pushing a wall of water in front of the boat is the key.
As for the seals, we have had no issues so far, but IMHO that is because we grease after every use and we try not to run the motor exessively out of the water. Just like a longtail, the seals need grease inside and water outside to keep them cool. As with longtails, run the motor excessively out of the water will heat up the seals and destroy them. I would think your have the same issues with these little motors. Just my thoughts on that issue.

Re: Phowler Prowler 1236 on the marsh - 12hp Copperhead
Have had my 6.5hp since August. Ran in mud, lillies, twisted lilly pads around the shaft, hit stumps, ran it out of water for short periods. Never any seal problems. But as Muddoctor said, I grease mine after every use. I'd contact Gil and see what is up.

Re: Phowler Prowler 1236 on the marsh - 12hp Copperhead
Just an update, the speeds we quoted are holding up in just about all conditions. Cutt Down ran the 1236 on a small river in TN beginning of the month, 26.4 down stream, 21.5 upstream, averaged 23-24 mph with two men. This is a shallow river, so speeds are a little faster then you would see in deeper water.
In our 1540 .100 jon we ran 23 with one man, 19-20 with two, 18.7 with three men, this is a 310 lbs hull.
In our 1636 Prowler we are getting 23 one man, 20 two men and 18 mph with three men.
This boat and motor combo is really working well. I have to hand it to Gil and Betsy, they have these little motors pushing really well and our boats that are build twice to three times heavier then the .070 and .060 car toppers are running the same loaded speeds as the lighter boats.

Re: Phowler Prowler 1236 on the marsh - 12hp Copperhead
We have run the smaller boats rigged out with all gear and extra gas etc. The 1236 is still running 19-20 mph. In the longer boats we have run with our layout cover and gear included. Only a mile or two slower then the stated speeds. In general, what we are running with three men alone should be right where you will run with two, dog, gear, blinds, etc.
The 1540 still ran 15 mph with four men in it (it is only rated for three with gear) so we are pretty sure our numbers will be right on with gear and extras.

Re: Phowler Prowler 1236 on the marsh - 12hp Copperhead
Great numbers man. Don't know about you, but I get a real kick out of listening to everyone say this is bs. If anyone down around florida wants to man up and quit just calling bs and come actually see what it does shoot me a pm. Sorry not trying to derail your thread, but I guess if you don't have a 35 or bigger your not supposed to run over 10mph!

Re: Phowler Prowler 1236 on the marsh - 12hp Copperhead
Anybody ran a 12hp on a car topper 12 or 14 jon boat? These are great speeds with some heavier duty hulls and I was wondering if a lighter boat would/could get even better performance...anybody? Thanks!
