I don't know anything about these engines or about mud motors in general. I have a 16 ft hull and wanting to know which of these 2 engines is faster and can take the most pounding. Where I hunt is shallow mud flats with stumps everywhere and which one out of these 2 can cut it? Thanks

What type of load do you normally carry?
Is your hull a Mod-v
If it is a thin hull you may want to look into a thicker hull built for mudmotors, a mudmotor and stumps will beat a boat up quick.

NONE, Go get you a 23 GT................But if your mine is set on those two than I would pick the GDSD.

Instead of considering the mini, look into the LA Special. It's an all around better frame than the mini, unless you are more concerned with the weight of the motor than the performance. That said, if weight is your primary concern is weight, the 23 Mini is the lightest 23 available.

The hull is an old monark flat bottom (POS), but don't have the money to buy a new hull. It is usually 2 guys and 2 dozen decoys, sometimes 3 guys and a dog. I would like to get up to speeds around max. 25 mph. Is there not a problem hitting stumps and logs with these mud motors? I was told to get a tall transom mud motor as well and wondering can the weight of the motor handle such a light boat? Thanks

They will both hold up to stumps. MB has a clutch.

Find u a person that weld's aluminum and tell him u need to beef up the transome and he should know what to do!!

I'd be very suprised if you get mid 20's with two guys and a huntin load with a 23 on a monarch hull.

Does the bottom have dents by the braces especially near the transom?

That can kill performance with mudmotor (mine is sufferin).

It will work if thats all you have... I saw you mentioned a tall transom motor, that all depends on if your boat is tall transom (around 20")
I would recomend you get it built up to tall and have some more braces on the transom to handle the beating a mudmotor will put on a hull.

Is a 23 hp just not enough to get up to 20 mph? or does the problem lie on the hull? There are no dents anywhere around the transom from what I can see after scraping off all this damn snow. It's got the ridges running down the bottom of the hull, will that effect performance?

The 23 GDSD is the only way to go! Tough as nails in the stumps and no clutch to burn up. I have a 23 GDSD on a G3 boat sitting in my shop. It is a nice rig for sure.

While tall (20") transoms are better, there's nothing wrong with short (16") transoms. Just get the motor that fits your boat. If ya set on a tall, but boat's a short, ya can get it built up to 20".
