Post Looking to getting a new Motor
Hi everyone!

I'm looking into getting a motor for my jon boat and I believe the boat is a 1436 or 1536 not really sure as it is at home at my parents house right now and im living in another city for the summer, What size motor do you guys reccommed i buy to get what I need out of the boat. I will be using it mostly for trapping and might take it fishing once in awhile. I will be mostly using it on rivers and small lakes.

Oh and when you measure your boat for the width is it the bottom that you measure or the width of the boat when you sitting in it

Thanks

Twig

Ya measure the bottom. You what a LT or SD? Most any motor will work i'd stay in the 10- 16 HP range.

1000 bucks, you are looking for an older used longtail, probably 16hp or less. Down here, you will see them pretty regularly. Up in your neck of the woods, I would imagine even the older one's hold their value a little better. That budget may be hard to work with.

What kind of terrain do you run? Why do you think you need a mudmotor?

I will be using it for trapping so marshs and shallow rivers and with rocks mostly, I would like to stay under 1000 but if i have to go over that would be fine. I'm mostly looking for something that would be realiable and fun to drive around. I like that you can lift the motor up if you have to go over something, can't do that with an outboard!

What about one of those super cheap thai longtail kits and a motor from harbor freight? Could probably build one of those things close to your price range. The shafts are ridiculously long and they come with aluminum props, but long as you can get a ss prop and take good care of it, I would think it would last a little while... Dunno, just throwing it out there.

Yeah I was thinking about that but when I look up harbor freight motors they don't seem to carry any motors bigger than 6.5 hp... Maybe I'm not looking at the right place but pretty sure I am.

I thought they carried a 13 at one point, but don't really know. Anyway the 6.5 is only a hundred bucks and you can buy an extended warranty that is basically a no questions asked exchange policy for a couple years. It wouldn't be fast, but it would fit your budget.

If you are handy, you may be able to pick up a used lawnmower engine off craigslist for cheap and rebuild it. Northern has a pretty big selection of engines too, but you aren't hardly gonna beat the 100 dollar engine.

*disclaimer  I have never used one of those thai kits and would probably never personally buy one, and usually discourage someone else from buying one, but i was just throwing it out as an option for you. I am in no way trying to convince you to buy one or really even saying it's a good idea, just that it's an option that would fit your budget.

I started with a 20 lt on a 1436. 20 and 16 block weigh the same, so if a twenty is available, go for it.
