Post homemade surface... other one got deleted
Building a 13 hp homemade sd, my other thread got deleted. Here it is, any suggestions, opinions. All welcome im new to this so tell me what ya think! Running a 32 tooth on top and 44 on bottom. The prop is a 10x8. And the motor is a 420 predator which says 13 but the other 420 is a 16 hp, dont understand that one!

Good start! You may need to beef up your 2 tabs for your steering, especially if you add a 35. How are you taking the prop thrust? Shoulder on the drive shaft? How are you going to tension the belt? You will learn a lot during the first build...

Well the two angle irons will have a 1/4" plate on top. Where they mount the holes will be slotted then when tightened there will be a weld to keep it there. In tje bottom of yhe housing there are 2 bearings and 2 thrust busglhings with a seal on yhe backside then the cap keeps it all in there with sealent and a set screw

Take apic from side at back of boat. With the drive tube level. Might need a longer belt housing if drive angle is off.might be the reason for 8mph looks good tho.

Like this? The box is 2 1/8" from the bottom of my boat. The drive tube is square to the box.

Well it don't look to bad the flatter the angle to bottom the better. How high does water draft on boat. It might be the prop possibly.you want that belt housing as close to water when running as possible without dragging.

1436 When the boat is sitting the box is about 1/4" out the water. But 8mph put the nose of my boat reaching for the sky which puts my box in the water about 1.5"

Does it feel like the prop is slipping when you give it full throttle? Kinda goes the same same speed even after you back off to about half.?also how deep are you having to trim down to get a bite.

I don't know the exact specifics, but the farther back the housing is the Higher it needs to be because the water will push up after it exits the bottom of the boat. As long as you can plane the boat and the bototm of the housing is out of the water on plane you will be ok. Do not hold this to be 100% truth, but that is how one would think to set it up.

Yes I am a welder, in laffayette. Now that you say sumtin , yes bout slippin. I notice a little bit of change but not much from half throttle to full throttle. Maxxis, thanks for the advice I thought the further back the faster it wpuld plane, isnt that why people put jack plates? Thanks for the help guys

When my gator trax had wrong transom angle and height it slipped bad just like you ran about. Could be either wrong prop . Drive angle. Or drive length

Do you have any pics or dimensions your willing to share of the tail.
This is one of the tidest home builds I've seen photos of.
Being on the other side of the world the only short tail I've seen in the flesh was on a trailer going the other way at 100k and its only the second I know of in the country.
Keep me posted on how it goes.
Cheers

Odass I'm leaning more towards the wrong prop, hopefully. I have the 10x8 and waiting in drive shaft for it. Well see I gotta see how much tweaking I'm gonna have to do with the motor, possible mods? Idk. Everything seems to line up right maybe my drive is to long?

Get that tach hooked up man see what kinda rpms you got. If oow it hits the governor it's not a motor issue it's a gear ratio or prop not hooking up due to not enough prop or bad angle because of transom height. Good luck buddy

Had a chance to put it in the water. No speeds because about half way through the test I popped the cord so I couldn't get it back started. I did however manage to get up pretty fast in about 5" of water.

I have the same size boat, 6.5 HP predator, 9x8 prop. I am getting 16 MPH in deep, open water and 18 in shallow water. Will post some pics tomorrow.

Same for me gents 14x36 riveted jon, 6.5hp harbor freight greyhound, 9x8 hill marine prop. Motor slightly modded getting about 15mph deep water with me and 70lb lab. 1.63:1 gearing. Also, with over a 500lb load it drops to about 10 or 11 mph but will still plane. Good enouph for me :D

All I can say is build away, I have great respect for you all because I know what these home builds entail just to get a finished product that is usable and halfway reliable. Merry Christmas to all
