motor not on a mudmotor, it was on my exmark lawnmower.

was cuttin the grass and it died. would spin over fast but not start.

checked all the usual suspects, looked ok.

pulled the sparkplugs, pistons going up and down.
pulled the valve covers, valves not moving while motor turning over.

motor only had 650 hrs on it. i put 1500+ hrs on 2 different prodrives with kholers on it. no major problems.

i just threw a new one on it, can't not get the grass cut!!!

anyway, what do u experts think happenned?

i think the gear that turns the cam fell off. i heard that kholer just presses them on, they are not keyed in place anymore.
i dunno. so now i got a new paperweight laying in the shop.

Either the gear fell off or if it's just pressed on its possible the gear is just turning inside the shaft. Why they would choose to press and not key that particular part defies common sense. If you didn't bend valves there's a possibility you could slap a camshaft in it and keep cuttin'

It died so you pulled the valve covers?
When you say you checked the usual suspects..like fuel? If you was getting a spark and it's spinning sounds like no fuel.

And could also be kill switches, that can all go out randomly. Like the seat, steering arms, and clutch engage.

He said engine was turning over faster than normal (indicates a loss of compression) and valvetrain not moving with engine turning. Probably more going on there than a fuel or kill switch issue Id imagine lol

fuel...yep
key on...yep
clutch enguaged....nope
safety glasses on...yep
appropriate clothing and sensible footwear...yep
engine turn over real fast....yep
engine sounded like it died a terrible death when it stopped running...yep
no valves/pushrods moving when engine turning over and pistons going up and down......yep

$50 might be too much!!!!!!!


had the same thing happen on a lycoming, the gear on the end of the crank that drives the mags and cam came off. no bad damage done, just a pain in the neck to fix right. was lucky it didn't smash the valvetrain or a piston or pushrod or worse.

was gonna tear it apart today, but did a leakdown on the old prodrive and need to do some stuff to it today.
got to be in good form for frog season.

the first lady shut me down on my 115 tiller handle merc. said i gots to sell somethin first.

anybody want a 12' deckover with a 300 lycoming for 10K? lol
