Post what are some simple mods for stock engine?
I am looking for another 100 rpms while running my longtail, 23 vanguard engine all stock
I put in a weekend of research on the governor, from what I can tell I'm not gona get any out of it as its a simple butterfly valve an it's all the way open as it is when throttle is applied?
I'm looking to get more air flow maybe k&n filter..
Will look into drilling out my main jet 2 bit sizes..

Don't want a new carb.
Not yet ready for head work.
Anything wrong with my ideas so far?

Wouldn't fuck with drilling out jets, seen that go wrong many times. Doubtful that a k&n filter is gona do anything for you without any other mods.
If you ain't gona spend any money on it you ain't gona feel any difference.
Good news is the carb setup for the 23 is cheaper. Having the heads decked locally with a valve job is pretty cheap too.
Check the classifieds for a used exhaust. You could do it all under a grand maybe less.

Good advice on drilling out jets, that's what I'm trying to feel out

One of the small things the 23 likes is a timing key. 7* is common but i like 4* . 7* can sometimes make it a bit hard to start. Advance keys are a cheap way to add cyl pressure.

Advance timing? I always herd of retarding the timing (never done it) but retarding creates longer strokes an more power?
Correct me if I'm wrong.
I would gut the muffler but I like the quiet motors for hunting.

It sounds like you need to get a tach, and research the governor a little more. The governor is a mechanical part inside the block. As RPMs increase, it moves a lever that closes the butterfly in the carb. Typically that's about 3600RPMs. You can bend and tweak the governor mechanisms to change the range the governor functions. You can turn it up to 4000-4200 out of water, and in the water its not going to have enough ass to reach those RPMS - but you'll still turn more than you're turning now.

Look up Deadbird8's thread on carb mods.
He does a lot to the carb, doing away with the hard 90* angles and stuff.
Its got a lot of pictures.
Ill see if I can dig it up tonight.
